Otmar Szafnauer, one of Formula 1’s most experienced team principals, has revealed that he is open to returning to the paddock, but the 61-year-old American-Romanian hinted that his next chapter in the sport might not be in the hot seat of a team principal.
Szafnauer, who spent over a decade leading the Silverstone-based outfit through its Force India and Racing Point eras, before departing to become Alpine’s team principal in 2022, was speaking about his future in the sport. He admitted that while he still has a passion for F1, the role he once held may no longer be the one he seeks.
A Storied Career in F1
Szafnauer’s F1 journey is a notable one. He joined the team then known as Force India in 2009, rising to the role of chief operating officer and later team principal. Under his leadership, the team punched above its weight, securing multiple podiums and establishing itself as a midfield powerhouse. When the team was reborn as Racing Point in 2019, Szafnauer continued at the helm, guiding the squad to a memorable victory at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix with Sergio Perez.
In 2022, he made the switch to Alpine, a factory team with grand ambitions. However, his tenure at Enstone was short-lived, lasting just over a year before he departed in 2023. Since then, Szafnauer has remained largely out of the spotlight, but his recent comments suggest he hasn’t closed the door on a return.
Open to New Challenges
While Szafnauer did not specify which roles he might consider, he indicated that a team principal position is not necessarily his preferred path back. ‘I’m open to a comeback, but it might not be in the same role,’ he said. ‘There are many ways to contribute to a team, and I have a lot of experience to offer.’
His remarks come at a time when F1 is seeing a shuffle of personnel, with several teams making changes to their leadership structures. Szafnauer’s vast knowledge of team operations, driver development, and strategic planning could make him an attractive candidate for advisory or managerial positions, even if he doesn’t return to the front-line role he once held.
