Ollie Bearman admits Lewis Hamilton’s F1 resurgence “not ideal” for his career

Oliver Bearman has made a candid admission about Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence in Formula 1, acknowledging that the seven-time world champion’s renewed form is a complication in his own path to a Ferrari seat.

The 21-year-old British driver, who is part of Ferrari’s driver academy and currently racing for Haas, has long been tipped as a future star for the Maranello squad. However, with Hamilton’s recent performances suggesting a return to his dominant best, Bearman knows that the door to a factory drive may remain closed for a while longer.

Hamilton’s revival complicates Bearman’s plans

Hamilton, who joined Ferrari in 2025, had a challenging start with the team, but the 2026 season has seen a remarkable turnaround. With multiple wins and a consistent challenge for the championship, the Briton has silenced doubts about his motivation and pace. For Bearman, who has impressed in his part-time outings with Ferrari and his full-time role at Haas, the timing is far from ideal.

“It’s not ideal for my career, to be honest,” Bearman admitted. “But it’s also great to see Lewis performing at such a high level. He’s a legend of the sport, and it’s a privilege to be in the same paddock as him. But from a selfish perspective, it does make things harder.”

Bearman’s comments come as he continues to build his case for a future promotion. After a strong rookie campaign with Haas in 2025, he has been even more impressive this year, regularly challenging for points and outshining his teammate on several occasions. His performances have not gone unnoticed, but with Hamilton and Charles Leclerc both under contract at Ferrari, there is no immediate vacancy.

The long game

Ferrari has a history of nurturing young talent, and Bearman is widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the sport. However, the team’s current driver lineup is arguably the strongest it has had in years. Leclerc, who has been with the team since 2019, is in his prime, and Hamilton’s resurgence has added a new dimension to the squad.

“I’m not stupid,” Bearman said. “I know that Lewis and Charles are both world-class, and they’re not going anywhere soon. My job is to keep doing what I’m doing, keep improving, and make sure that when the opportunity comes, I’m ready to take it.”

The British driver has also drawn inspiration from Hamilton’s comeback. “Seeing how Lewis has turned things around after a tough period is motivating. It shows that hard work and belief can make a huge difference. I’ve learned a lot from watching him, even if it’s from a distance.”

What the future holds

Bearman’s immediate focus remains on his current campaign with Haas, where he is aiming to help the American team secure a top-five finish in the constructors’ championship. Beyond that, the 2027 driver market could be a pivotal moment, with several top teams expected to have seats available.

For now, Bearman is content to bide his time, even if Hamilton’s form complicates his long-term plans. “I’m in a good position,” he said. “I’m learning a lot, I’m racing against the best in the world, and I have the support of Ferrari behind me. That’s all I can ask for at this stage of my career.”

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on both Hamilton’s championship push and Bearman’s continued development. For the young Brit, the dream of racing for Ferrari in red remains alive, but he knows that patience is key.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: my goal is to be a Ferrari driver. Whether that’s in 2027, 2028, or later, I’ll be ready. Lewis has shown that age is just a number, and I have time on my side. It’s not ideal, but it’s not the end of the world either.”
