The clock is ticking for Yamaha as Fabio Quartararo sets the upcoming Sepang test as the definitive proving ground for the factory’s radical new V4 project.
Enduring a winless drought that has stretched over three and a half seasons, the 2021 World Champion has made his demands for the 2026 campaign crystal clear. As the curtain falls on the era of the Inline-4 M1, Quartararo is no longer interested in development years; he wants a machine capable of winning immediately.
“I need a fast bike. I need to feel that it’s a winning bike,” Quartararo stated firmly. His target isn’t just sporadic podiums, but consistent contention: “I want to fight for top 3 and top 5 in every single Sprint, and every single GP. I spent many years struggling but now I want a winning bike.”
The Road from Valencia to Malaysia
Initial impressions of the V4 prototype at Misano were muted, but the post-season test at Valencia offered a glimmer of hope. Despite running with a detuned engine, Quartararo managed to lap just 0.554s off the pace, finishing 15th on the timesheets.
However, the Valencia iteration was far from the finished product. According to test rider Augusto Fernandez, the aim is to unleash the “real” V4 by the time the paddock arrives in Malaysia.
Quartararo is pinning his hopes on this evolution. “For Valencia, I know the bike will still not be completely ready,” he acknowledged. “But in February [at Sepang], the bike will almost be the one we’ll race. It’s going to be super important to have what I want in the Sepang test.”
A Crucial Winter
Yamaha will look to maximize their development time this winter. Thanks to their ‘Rank D’ concession status, the factory riders won’t have to wait for the Official Test (February 3-5). Instead, Quartararo and his teammates will be eligible to put the new V4 through its paces during the Shakedown Test, scheduled for January 29-31.
For Yamaha, the mission is clear: arrive at Sepang with a bike that doesn’t just promise potential, but delivers the performance their star rider demands.
