Mitch Evans’ Formula E title challenge suffered another blow in the opening race of the London E-Prix, as the Jaguar driver could only manage eighth place after a virtual safety car intervention and what he described as “extreme games” from the Porsche camp.
Starting from third on the grid at the ExCeL circuit, Evans was in the thick of the fight for the lead in the early stages. But a virtual safety car (VSC) period, which came at the worst possible moment for the New Zealander, dropped him down the order and effectively ended his hopes of a strong result.
“It’s typical of my luck,” Evans said after the race, reflecting on the timing of the VSC. The comment encapsulated a season in which misfortune has repeatedly struck the Jaguar driver at critical moments, leaving him playing catch-up in the championship standings.
While Evans was careful not to point fingers directly, he did reference “extreme” tactics from Porsche, who are locked in a tight battle with Jaguar for both the drivers’ and teams’ titles. The remark hinted at aggressive defensive driving or strategic maneuvering that, in Evans’ view, went beyond the bounds of normal racing.
The result means that Pascal Wehrlein, who started from pole position for Porsche, extended his advantage in the drivers’ championship. Wehrlein converted his starting slot into a victory, while Evans could only watch as his title rival pulled further ahead.
For Evans, the London double-header was always going to be a crucial juncture in the season. With only a handful of races remaining, every point matters. Finishing eighth, rather than on the podium, is a significant setback.
The VSC incident was particularly frustrating because Evans had been running strongly and looked set to challenge for a top-three finish. The timing of the safety car, which bunched up the field and allowed cars behind to pit without losing track position, worked against him.
“We had the pace, but the timing of the VSC just killed us,” Evans explained. “It’s one of those things, but it’s hard to take when it happens at such a crucial stage of the season.”
Porsche’s tactics, which Evans described as “extreme games,” appeared to involve strategic blocking or team orders that hindered Evans’ progress. While such tactics are common in motorsport, Evans felt they crossed a line.
“There’s racing, and then there’s games,” he said. “I think today we saw a bit of the latter.”
The London E-Prix is one of the most anticipated events on the Formula E calendar, with its unique indoor-outdoor layout and the electric atmosphere of the ExCeL venue. For Evans, however, the weekend has so far been one to forget.
With the second race of the double-header set to take place on Sunday, Evans will need to regroup quickly if he is to keep his title hopes alive. The gap to Wehrlein is now substantial, and a win is almost essential to stay in contention.
Jaguar team principal James Barclay acknowledged the disappointment but urged his driver to keep fighting. “Mitch drove a strong race today, but circumstances conspired against him,” Barclay said. “We’ll analyze what happened and come back stronger tomorrow.”
Evans, for his part, remains defiant. “We’ll keep pushing,” he said. “It’s not over until it’s over.”
The London E-Prix continues to be a battleground for the championship, with both Jaguar and Porsche pushing the limits of strategy and sportsmanship. For Evans, the hope is that his luck will turn in the final races.
As the Formula E season reaches its climax, every decision, every overtake, and every safety car can have massive implications. Evans knows this all too well, having been on the wrong side of fortune more than once this year.
But as he has shown throughout his career, Evans is a fighter. The New Zealander will not give up easily, and Sunday’s race provides an immediate opportunity to make amends.
For now, though, the pain of Saturday’s missed opportunity will linger. “It’s typical of my luck,” he repeated, a wry smile on his face. “But we’ll keep pushing.”
